Converting Canon CR2 RAW images
A question from Graham McMaster
My Canon 40D saves files in a RAW CR2 image format. These can be partly edited in proprietary Canon software before opening as a TIF in Photoshop. However, the resulting TIF or PSD image cannot be resaved as a JPEG possibly due to Canon’s CR2 RAW vs. Adobe RAW format. One cumbesome solution is to drag a copy of the original PSD or TIF onto a newly opened Photoshop “blank” image – this can be saved as a JPEG. There has to be a better way …….?

I don’t normally use the Canon Software (I have Digital Photo Professional), but gave it a try. I opened a CR2 file and used it to transfer the image to Photoshop. Digital Phot Professional transfers the CR2 image into Photoshop in 16 bit mode. In Photoshop, go to Image/Mode – you will see a tick next to 16 bits/channel. To enable you to save in jpeg, the image mode must be 8 bits/channel. Simply tick the 8 bits/channel option. Then go to file/save as and you should see the jpeg option.
