Like most things in Photoshop there are a number of techniques for sharpening an image. But when to use them and how? The two methods I use are listed below with some very nice and concise tutorials to go with them. The first one is the good old unsharpen mask filter. The tutorial has some good tips on how to apply this so its worth a read even if you have used this technique lots. The second tutorial is the high pass filter something I use for landscape shots and images with a lot of detail and something worth trying out yourself if you have not already.
Technique One: Unsharpen Mask filter. Visit Tutorial Here

Technique Two: High Pass Filter. Visit Tutorial Here

Finally if you have broad band internet you can download this episode of photoshop TV.This goes into a little of what technique is better for what situations and also demonstrates them. If you have anything to add or want to talk about a technique of your own please feel free to write something up and contact us via the contact form.

The first meeting for 2010 is this Thursday the 28th, it is a members Holiday Show and Tell, come along and let us know what you have been doing over the last two months, bring some images as well. There will be a report on the great day had at Hanging Rock – Australia Day Races, hopefully with plenty of images. Those members and their families that attended had a very pleasant day.

We will have the projected images file name and resize program on the clubs laptop to instruct those that need help with this program, I have heard from a few members of their inability to get it to work.

Don’t forget that entries for the February Competition are due this Thursday as well.

Looking forward to seeing you all, Happy New Year in Photography.

Sometimes it simply provides inspiration from other photographers’ work from sites such as Flickr and Redbubble.

We would love to grow our website into a fantastic resource directory. The best places on the net for tutorials, how to’s, fantastic work, etc. Making the links section of the site a real asset.

To do this we need you to send in the articles and links that you discover on the net. You can do this via the Contact Us page. You could even write up a quick blurb about the link and this could be posted on the site News section, letting people know there is a great new resource that you have found.

I have added a really good one on HDR to get us started

The Ballarat Foto Biennale is being held from September 4 to October 4. On the weekend of 12 and 13 September VAPS (Victorian Association of Photographic Societies) will be taking a space at the Ballarat School of Mines for all camera club members to use as a drop-in area/meeting point whilst they are in Ballarat for the Biennale. Tea and coffee will be available to all.

An exhibition of prints will be staged on this weekend at the drop-in centre. Clubs have been asked to submit two or three prints (Colour or Monochrome – Open subject) for this exhibition. We have informed VAPS that we will participate. We are waiting on further details, but in the meantime please select one print or two prints from your catalogue that you would like to have considered for selection. Please note that prints must be on a mount size of 16″ x 20″ (no larger or smaller).

When we know more details on when/how we need to submit prints we can work out how we select the three we will submit to represent the club. If it fits in with a regular meeting night we may have a members vote (eg on a 3/2/1 basis) otherwise we may need to appoint a selection committee on a separate night.
Will keep you informed.

In the meantime you may wish to check out the Ballarat Foto Biennale website to see whats on offer.
